Against the odds, Vale won through to the Image Printers Cup
Final after scoring a victory on their first ever visit to
Spartans splendid new Ainslie Park home. It was backs to the
wall stuff at times as Spartans put Vale under intense pressure,
but the defence held firm in the face of the capital side's
onslaught. Vale made the breakthrough in the 26th minute as
an Ousman Sonko corner found it’s way to Aaron Somerville
at the edge of the area, who struck a superb volley high into
the net. It was a lead Vale took back to the dressing room,
despite having a real scare shortly before half time when
a Keith McLeod cut back found Gavin Malin, who somehow contrived
to lift the ball onto the the bar from a few yards out. Six
minutes into the second period, Vale increased their lead
with a breathtaking strike from Somerville. Running onto a
long ball, the striker checked back to lose his marker before
unleashing a stunning shot high into the net from 25 yards.
In the 63rd minute Malin atoned for his earlier miss by knocking
home the rebound after McLeod’s shot had been blocked
and for a 20 minute spell no one inside Ainslie Park would
have bet against Spartans grabbing at least another couple.
Ross Archibald glanced a header wide, a McLeod rocket destined
for the top corner was superbly tipped away by keeper Mark
Wilson and Donal Henretty curled a shot onto the bar as Spartans
lay seige to the Vale goal. An agonising moment in injury
time saw a McLeod shot hit the inside of the upright and trickle
across the line and spin past the other post, but as the clock
ran down Spartans appeared to realise that it just wasn’t
going to be their day.
