Vale of Leithen midfielder Richard Edge has been rushed to
hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage. The 26 year-old
is one of a quartet of players who signed for the club from
Peebles FC during the summer, and it is the second spell at
the club for him. Although he had failed to establish himself
in the side during the 2003-04 season, he returned from three
years at Peebles Rovers/Peebles FC a better player and has
been a regular starter this season, playing the full 90 minutes
of Saturday's Scottish Cup tie against Culter. He was taken
to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after collapsing yesterday
where his situation was described as serious but stable.

Vale came agonisingly close to taking this Scottish Cup Second
Round tie to a deserved replay, but a goal four minutes from
time by Culter's Graham Cadger, scored moments after Vale's
John Sanders had been sent off for his second bookable offence
takes the North Region side through to the Third Round. Culter
had started well and took the lead on 32 minutes, with a quick
break upfield. A Martin Pirie goal kick was touched on by
Cadger to Gordon Farmer, who lifted the ball over Vale keeper
Mark Wilson. Having taken the lead, Culter retreated and Vale
piled on the pressure, eventually getting their reward in
the 74th minute, when substitute Aaron Somerville ran onto
a long pass by Ross McManus, and the young striker got to
the ball ahead of Pirie to score his third Scottish Cup goal
this season. A Culter 'goal' by Peter Stewart was chalked
off for offside and it looked like the tie was heading back
to Innerleithen next Saturday. But five minutes after having
been booked for a foul on Culter's Cadger, Vale captain Sanders
recklessly chopped down John Brown on the touchline and the
referee showed him a second yellow. Brown put the resulting
free kick into the box and Andrew Campbell lifted the ball
against the bar, which rebounded kindly for Cadger to stick
it away and leave Vale gutted.
Culter: Martin Pirie; Andy Sim, Murray Rattray, Adam Wilson
(Daniel Craib 58), Andy Campbell, Donny Adam (Bruce Smith
67), John Brown, Graham Cadger, Chris Mountford (Peter Stewart
72), Colin Craik, Gordon Farmer. Subs unused: Philip McCall,
Carson Riches (sg)
Vale of Leithen: Mark Wilson; Ronald Fleming, Richard Edge,
John Sanders, Campbell Forsyth, Ross McManus, Colin Smith,
Ray Fleming, Lewis Montgomery, Greig Shortreed, Ryan McManus
(Aaron Somerville 66). Subs unused: Mike MacKale, Ross Alexander,
Mel Graham, Peter Shearlaw (sg).
• Despite the disappointment of the result, Vale would
like to thank Culter Football Club for the excellent hospitality
shown towards all those who made the long trip from Innerleithen.
Chairman Doug Jamieson kindly presented his Vale counterpart
Ken Brown with a plaque marking the day, which will now take
it's place in the Vale boardroom. Best of luck to Culter for
the rest of the season, and thanks for ordering in extra pies!

It wasn't the start new management team of Robbie Clark and
Lindsay Rathie were looking for, but a late rally could have
stolen a point for Vale as they came back from 3-0 down to
give the Edinburgh side a fright. Strollers took the lead
in the 20th minute, as a Daniel Wheelan corner was only cleared
as far as Bobby Reid who smashed a shot through a crowd of
players which took a deflection on the way in. Seven minutes
later ex-Vale midfielder Craig Dickson drove forward to release
Daryl Devlin, who was brought down as he attempted to round
Mark Wilson in the area. A red card for Wilson would've kept
the keeper out of next week's Scottish Cup tie, but thankfully
referee Gavin Ross chose only to brandish a yellow at Wilson
and Devlin himself stepped up to convert the penalty. Devlin
notched another goal nine minutes into the second half and
Strollers seemed to be sitting pretty, but the Vale fightback
began as Lewis Montgomery headed home a Richard Edge free
kick in the 78th minute. Seven minutes from time Peter Shearlaw
clawed Vale further back into things, the young substitute
showing tremendous skill and composure to delicately chip
Youseff Begaoui from the edge of the area. The visitors were
firmly on the backfoot for the rest of the game, but Vale
couldn't make another one count.
Vale of Leithen: Mark Wilson; Ross Alexander (Ronald Fleming
56), Ross McManus (Peter Shearlaw 72), John Sanders, Scott
Johnston, Ryan McManus, Colin Smith, Raymond Fleming, Mike
MacKale (Greig Shortreed 54), Lewis Montgomery, Richard Edge.
Civil Service Strollers: Youseff Begaoui; Kevin Fettes, Graeme
Newall, Russell Hogarth, Lotfi Barbiroui, Daryl Devlin (Chris
Adams 67), Daniel Wheelan, Craig Dickson, Mark Antoni (George
Calder 74), Bobby Reid, David Carlin (Tony Currie 79).

The club have confirmed that Lindsay Rathie has arrived to
complete a new look management team at Victoria Park. The
former player will join forces with recent caretaker manager
Robbie Clark as co-managers, supported by coaches Jack Diamond
and Gary Norman. Rathie played for Vale between 1992 and 2003,
before becoming assistant to Alan Notman at Leithen Rovers,
helping the amateurs to their most successful campaign ever
last season as they captured the Border Amateur League, South
Cup and Beveridge Cup. Clark has overseen Vale's last two
games, against Gala Fairydean in the Scottish Cup and a league
fixture against Heriot-Watt University, both of which have
seen the team playing well and winning. Rathie and Clark will
certainly be plunged into the deep end with their first match
at home this Saturday against high-flying Civil Service Strollers
in the league, followed by the Scottish Cup second round tie
at Culter.

Vale twice came from behind at Riccarton to grab three league
points against a Heriot-Watt side who don't seem to be enjoying
much luck at the moment. The students caught the Vale defence
flat-footed in the third minute, as an Oliver Antoni flick
set Lee Manderson off down the right and his cross was converted
by Luke Cassidy. The home side were certainly the better side
in the opening quarter, but suffered a double blow as firstly
a shambolic own goal by Stewart Cairns allowed Vale to draw
level in the 21st minute, before they lost the services of
goalkeeper Iain Begg to injury in the 37th, with midfielder
Phil Green taking over the gloves. Eight minutes into the
second half, Watt took the lead again. Mark Wells exchanged
passes with Cassidy and although his shot was cleared off
the line by Ross McManus, Antoni was following up to hammer
the ball home. However, Watt's replacement keeper Green looked
vulnerable and when he allowed a Greig Shortreed cross to
slip underneath him in the 58th minute, Ryan McManus was there
to poke the ball home. Vale were in control of things by now
and the winner arrived in the 66th minute as, despite the
presence of the towering Watt centre-halfs, Lewis Montgomery
rose superbly to meet a Ross McManus cross and glance a header
into the net.
Heriot-Watt University: Iain Begg (Jamie Brown 37); Scott
Sutherland, Jimmy Rae, Frazer Patterson, Stewart Cairns, Doug
Considine, Phil Green, Oliver Antoni, Luke Cassidy (Gary MacBrayne
85), Lee Manderson, Mark Wells (Alan Mitchell 74).
Vale of Leithen: Mark Wilson; Robbie Clark (Ross Alexander
64), Ross McManus, John Sanders, Scott Johnston, Colin Smith,
Ryan McManus, Ray Fleming, Mike MacKale (Greig Shortreed 55),
Lewis Montgomery, Richard Edge (Mel Graham 74).

excitingly, the bloke in The Sun who ran out of pies. If anyone
from Culter is reading this, please tell him to stock up a
bit, as it is a long journey from Innerleithen and we may
well be hungry by the time we get there.
